What is counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who counsel with people over a short or long term to help them bring about effective change or enhance their wellbeing.

The first session starts with the client completing an intake and signing the terms of service. A general discussion will follow with the counsellor answering any questions the client may have.

Usually individuals choose to have therapy because they are experiencing difficulties and distress in their lives. Sometimes people can be isolated but at other times, even where an individual has the most supportive family and friends, they can find it difficult if not impossible to explain why, for example, they may be feeling anxious and or depressed. Or it may be easier to talk about personal, family, or relationship issues with a person who is independent of friends and family. Other life issues and events which can be very difficult to deal with include bereavement, divorce, redundancy, health issues, bullying and so on. However, you do not have to be in crisis or on the verge of one, before choosing to engage in therapy. You may be experiencing underlying feelings of dissatisfaction with life in general, or be seeking balance and spirituality in your life. All of these reasons and more will bring individuals to therapy.

What does therapy cost?

Sessions are usually 1 ½ hour for a fee of $120 which includes all taxes.  This fee is the same for individuals and couples.  Payment may be made by cash or cheque.  A fee of $30 is charged for all dishonored cheques.

Does Head to Soul Counselling accept insurance?

If you require a receipt one will be provided at the end of the session.  Some insurance companies and health plans will cover all or a portion of counselling costs.  Please ensure you have read and understand the terms of your particular coverage. Most policies are very specific as to what counsellors will be accepted.  If in doubt please discuss this with Dennis.

Can I cancel my session?

24 hours cancellation notice is required under normal circumstances.  If the session is missed for other than emergency or medical situations a fee of $50 is payable with the next booked session.  If no session is booked a billing will be mailed to the client for payment.

What is your confidentiality policy?

All sessions are strictly confidential.

Limitations:  We are required by law to report to the RCMP or the Ministry of Child and Family Development if there is a reason to believe a child (or children) under 18 is being abused, as well if a person’s life is in jeopardy. Additionally, if the Court subpoenas Dennis to testify in court or to release the contents of a file, he is required to do so.  Children under the age of 18 must have parent/guardian permission before beginning counselling.
